To Rome Again

Julie

Megan and I went to Rome again to today. We started the day trying to get to the Pantheon but accidentally ended up getting detoured by a parade. We ended up finding a palace with armed guards, which we could actually find on our map, so we made our way to the Pantheon. After an early lunch we went inside. It was beautiful! I managed to take one tablet picture.

Afterwards, we made our way down to the Circus Maximus, which unfortunately is now just a field but would have looked amazing back in the day. Nearby was the Santa Maria in Cosmedin church, which houses the fairly famous Mouth of Truth. The legend is that if you put your hand in his mouth and tell a lie, he'll bite you. I didn't test it, but Megan and I did get a picture together with our hands in his mouth. Then we looked through the little church, which was very pretty.

We finished off the day by going to the Baths of Caracalla, which were enormous. There was also randomly a black bunny sitting on the grass, which we decided was the reincarnation of Caracalla. There were some really nice mosaics still there, and we got to go underground and see part of the maintenance tunnels.

That was it for the day! It was nice to just be the two of us again and take things at our own pace. Tonight, we need to finish up our dig journals and start thinking about the papers we need to hand in. In theory. We may just relax and do nothing for the whole evening, who knows.

Back to work tomorrow!

About Me

My name is Julie, and I love getting to explore new places. I live in Ottawa, Canada, but I was very lucky to grow up in Germany and travel around Europe as a kid. As we travelled, my family often camped out instead of staying in hotels. We once camped beside Loch Ness (no monster sightings, sadly)!
