The Caere Necropolis

Julie

Updated: May 27, 2019

I'm going to start this post by finishing up what we did yesterday, since I wrote it around noon. The most exciting thing that happened last night was dinner. They kept bringing out different kinds of pizza to us. At first it was normal cheese, but then we had potato pizza and zucchini pizza, both of which were surprisingly delicious. Here's some zucchini pizza.

They also gave us some sort of delicious rice balls with tomato and cheese. Anyway, we then went home to sleep.

Today we had a tour of the necropolis (City of the Dead, a graveyard) for the city of Caere. It was really cool. The graves were put in mounds called tumulus. Their outline was cut down into the rock, which is fairly soft, and then the mound part was piled on top. The tombs were carved out to represent houses, so we can tell when the tombs were carved by which style of house they used. Most of them had multiple rooms for multiple bodies. We got to go inside a few of them, as well as one that isn't usually open to the public (Tomba Degli Scudie E Sedie) because we're special.

After lunch we were shown different types of pottery we may find, and we had a presentation about a brief history of the area and the Etruscans.

Finally we went grocery shopping and now we're eating dinner at the internet cafe. We need to wake up really early tomorrow so we'll probably be going to bed soon.

Oh, also, things are going well at our apartment/house. I figured out how to use the washing machine, which was an adventure. It can't run at the same time as the shower, which we only have one of. So us trying to get clean after dig days will be interesting.

Bye for now!

PS: Happy Mother's Day! Love you Mom! <3

About Me

My name is Julie, and I love getting to explore new places. I live in Ottawa, Canada, but I was very lucky to grow up in Germany and travel around Europe as a kid. As we travelled, my family often camped out instead of staying in hotels. We once camped beside Loch Ness (no monster sightings, sadly)!
