Hadrian's Villa

Updated: May 31, 2019

Today we went to Tivoli. It was a great day but confusing. To get to Tivoli we had to take a train to Rome (Roma Termini, the main train station), then the subway to Roma Tiburtina, another train station, and then finally a train to Tivoli. Even though we left fairly early in the morning we didn't get to Tivoli until 11:30. We then had to find out way to Hadrian's Villa, which was our main reason for going. Tivoli seems to be split into two sections, part of the city on top of the hill (where the train station is), and part of it at the bottom (where the Villa is), 6km away! We had to take a bus down.

Hadrian's Villa is huge, almost the size of a small town. And like Ostia, it was great because it is partially still there, but also not surrounded by new buildings. It's off on it's own and we could almost imagine being back in time. It had two large ponds filled with fish and some turtles (the water was kind of green, unfortunately). There were cool statues, some partially still standing buildings and domes, and the cool little area where Hadrian built a moat around a man-made island so that he could hide out on it and not get bothered. I took a bunch of pictures, of course, but forgot my tablet so couldn't take any with it.

After leaving the villa we did a bit of shopping, and left Tivoli around six. We then had to make the long trek home, which is why we got home so late. We literally just had time to make dinner and then go to sleep!

Overall, it was a long day but a good one!
