Florence and Pisa

Updated: May 27, 2019

So we started off the day early, and after a great breakfast at our hostel we walked down to the Galleria Del'Accadamia, which is an art gallery. There were a lot of huge Renaissance paintings, as well as sculptures and paintings from monasteries. When looking at the sculptures, we got to sound intelligent by talking about things we learned in our archaeology class last semester, about the way clothing and hair were carved. But the most important thing was Michaelangelo's famous David sculpture, which was enormous! We always thought it was life size, or just a bit bigger, but no, it is huge. 17 feet, according to wikipedia.

Once we were done there, we took the train to Pisa to see the Leaning Tower. Now, I had an ingenious plan and brought my tablet along to take a few pictures, so I'll try to add them in.

We debated going up the tower but decided it was too expensive but also way too much work and we were tired. We did, however, go inside the Cathedral which is the building next to the tower in one of my pictures. It was beautiful inside, especially the ceilings. I didn't bother with any tablet pictures there because they would be way too dark.

We came back to Florence and wandered around some more. I took some pictures of the Duomo I mentioned yesterday.

The last picture is one I bought, it shows the building better. It's a typical Cathedral shape, and then it had that really tall tower beside it. Every wall is carved like you can see in those pictures. It made us wonder why somebody would spend the time carving all the statues that are too high on the walls to see. They're beautiful, of course, but they must have taken ages!

We then ate dinner and came back to the hostel to relax for the rest of the evening.
