Caere Dig Week One

Updated: May 31, 2019

On our way to the dig site!

May 13th - Day One - Washing

Today was our first day on site! Unfortunately, I can't actually say anything specific about the site or put up any pictures. I didn't dig today, but some people did. I was with a group of three other people (there were a bunch of groups doing the same thing) cleaning off stuff found last year. We had shards of tile and pots, nothing too fancy but some had stamps or a little bit of paint. The four of us in the group called ourselves Team Dysfunctional because we kept making mistakes. Not major mistakes, just minor like accidentally washing something we weren't supposed to (we did accidentally put bone into the water a few times). Anyway, that's about all I can say about today. Weekdays will probably just be like this, little vague reports of what I've done. The weekends will be more interesting.

May 14 - Day Two - Digging

So today I worked in the trench clearing out all the backfill (in section C). Again, can't say much about it except that I moved a lot of dirt. I worked with two other members of Team Dysfunctional, but then one of them ditched us and some other people joined. I got to use my trowel for the first time! By the end of the day most of us were just sweeping away left over loose dirt to get to the same layer as the dig last year reached (they refill to protect everything during the off season). That's really all I have to day!

Oh, also, the one other member of Team Dysfunctional and the two other people who joined us started telling a story where we each said one word. Our story ended

up being about a dog named Bob Billy Bob and his brother Jim, and their friends who teach math but hate math. Also Jim is teased for his strange voice. At that point we stopped the story because one of us wandered off to work in another section.

Ok, now that's it. Bye!

May 15 - Day Three - Excavating

So today I actually started excavating new stuff! Can't tell you anything about it though! :P Here are some fun pictures of my dirty boots and trowel. Just so the people who saw them before they were dirty can see the difference.

May 16 - Day Four - Raining

It was raining today! We couldn't dig because of it so we went to a museum instead - Museo Nazionale Cerite Claudia Ruspoli. We couldn't take pictures inside but here's one of the entrance.

The museum was mostly pottery found in the area. It's actually in the old castle for the town. We learned a lot so it was a pretty good trip! And it gave our backs a break from leaning over in the trenches!

May 17 - Day Five - Finding

I found something today, but I can't tell you anything about it! Other then the fact that it was cool. In other news, it rained a bit this morning but then became really nice. Tomorrow we're going on a field trip so there may actually be pictures. That's about it!
